Advanced Life Support (ALS) is a critical component of emergency medical care, involving a set of evidence-based interventions used to manage life-threatening conditions such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and severe trauma. ALS protocols provide guidelines for airway management, defibrillation, intravenous medication administration, and post-resuscitation care (American Heart Association, 2024). Compliance with these protocols is essential for improving patient survival and reducing complications in emergency cases.
In Nigeria, emergency healthcare services are often constrained by inadequate resources, workforce shortages, and inconsistencies in protocol adherence. Kogi State, like many regions, faces challenges in ensuring that emergency nurses consistently follow ALS guidelines in managing critically ill patients (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2023). Factors such as limited training, high workload, and lack of standardized monitoring mechanisms contribute to non-compliance with ALS protocols (Garba & Sanni, 2024).
Despite the importance of ALS compliance in emergency care, there is a lack of research assessing emergency nurses’ adherence to these protocols in Kogi State. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which emergency nurses comply with ALS protocols, identify barriers to compliance, and suggest strategies for improving adherence.
Effective emergency care relies on strict adherence to ALS protocols. However, evidence suggests that many emergency nurses in Kogi State do not consistently follow these guidelines, leading to suboptimal patient outcomes (Williams & Yusuf, 2024). Factors such as inadequate training, fatigue, and insufficient monitoring mechanisms contribute to deviations from best practices.
Failure to comply with ALS protocols can result in preventable deaths, complications, and prolonged hospital stays. There is a need to assess the level of compliance among emergency nurses, identify the root causes of non-adherence, and propose interventions to enhance adherence. This study seeks to bridge this knowledge gap and improve emergency care practices in Kogi State.
H₀: Emergency nurses in Kogi State do not significantly comply with ALS protocols.
H₁: Emergency nurses in Kogi State significantly comply with ALS protocols.
H₀: There are no significant challenges affecting emergency nurses’ adherence to ALS guidelines.
H₁: There are significant challenges affecting emergency nurses’ adherence to ALS guidelines.
H₀: Implementing new strategies will not improve compliance with ALS protocols.
H₁: Implementing new strategies will improve compliance with ALS protocols.
This study focuses on emergency nurses in hospitals and trauma centers in Kogi State. It examines the level of ALS protocol compliance, challenges faced, and possible solutions. Limitations include variations in hospital protocols, self-reported data, and differences in training experiences among nurses.
